“The most destructive force on the planet is commercial agriculture,” declares Marjory Wildcraft, “and the good news is there is a lot you can do about it”. Many people feel helpless in the face of the ecological challenges we are facing. Climate change, polluted rivers, and dead zones in the oceans are just a few problems. But these issues seem so big and out of our individual control. “You are probably using low-energy light bulbs, reusing shopping bags, and driving a fuel-efficient car – and that does help,” says Wildcraft,”but you can make a much bigger difference by producing some of your own food and taking the stress off the big commercial systems which are so damaging to our environment”.
Commercial agriculture is destructive to Earth
Scientific American published an article demonstrating the huge waste of energy in our vast centralized food supply. It takes over 10 calories of energy just to get just 1 calorie of food onto your plate. One of the biggest wastes is the fuel needed for transport. Food is shipped over 1,500 miles on average, which requires enormous amounts of diesel. The energy costs continue to rack up when you consider the tractors, fertilizers, processing, and packaging, which adds immensely to the energy bill.
Backyard farmers to the rescue!
The energy and carbon savings by home growers are immediately obvious. When you grow your own at home, there is not a drop of fuel used in shipping or delivery as you simply step out onto your patio or into your backyard. You pick your foods and eat them fresh, so you eliminate the processing and packaging. And most home growers use organic methods and homemade fertilizers, further cutting down on petroleum use.
The leader of a movement you want to get involved with: Marjory Wildcraft is an expert in backyard food production
Wildcraft has developed a simple system that anyone can implement to grow at least half of their own food in a small backyard space. Wildcraft is seeking partners to help her calculate the carbon cost savings when one person switches from using the big commercial systems to growing their own food. “It is obvious the carbon savings are immense, and we really want to quantify it to help empower people with the impact they can have,” says Wildcraft.
