Rumors circulating about a substantial $500 billion Bitcoin purchase by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) are unlikely to come to fruition, according to insights from a local financial executive shared with Cointelegraph.
The speculation, propagated by Bitcoin enthusiasts on X (formerly Twitter) in recent weeks, suggests that Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund could be considering a significant addition of $500 billion in BTC to its investment portfolio.
However, the likelihood of such a move is deemed low by financial executive Shadi Qishta, who noted that digital assets are not currently part of QIA’s investment strategy. QIA, being a sovereign wealth fund, requires approval for its investment decisions from its Board and the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment (SCEAI), suggesting that any substantial change in its portfolio allocation would need to pass through these bodies.
This speculation also appears to be at odds with previous statements made by QIA’s CEO, Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al-Mahmoud. During Qatar’s Economic Forum in 2022, Al-Mahmoud reportedly stated, “Our team in the technology space is exploring opportunities in the blockchain. This is the space that we’re interested in, not the currency itself.”
Furthermore, there was no mention of cryptocurrencies during the Qatar Web Summit’s opening ceremony in February. According to Qishta, “Nothing was explicitly mentioned about cryptocurrency investments,” adding that Abu Dhabi also announced $100 billion in technology innovation and artificial intelligence investments without including digital assets in their plans.
Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, primarily due to its vast natural gas and oil reserves, Qatar’s stance on cryptocurrencies remains cautious. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that the country’s total economic output will grow by almost 2% annually until 2025.
The local environment for digital assets in Qatar is characterized by careful regulatory oversight and limited public adoption, as cryptocurrency trading was banned in 2018, according to Qishta.
